Abstract: |
CFA Archaeology conducted an archaeological within two fields forming part of the Blair House Reclamation and Surface Mine Site in near Oakley, Fife. The evaluation total evaluation covered 7007m2 or c. 5% of 139'000m2 of land which was deemed suitable for archaeological trail trenching. A previous desk based assessment had indicated that the land had been historically given over to plantation and coal exploitation. The evaluation, in agreement with the County of Fife Archaeologist, targeted two fields which had historically remained undisturbed. Trial trenching in Field A uncovered horse-shoe field drains and two swathes of relict rig-and-furrow cultivation. A narrow, shallow gully was excavated in Trench 38. The feature has been interpreted as either a drainage gully or a truncated ditch and is therefore deemed contemporary with the cultivation furrows and probably dates to a period around the 18th century. Trial trenching in Field B uncovered further remains of rig-and-furrow cultivation. A single sherd of green-glaze pottery, which can be dated to between the 15th to the 18th centuries was excavated from a cultivation furrow. No other features of archaeological interest were uncovered. |
