Abstract:
Archaeology South East was commissioned by Chartwell Land and New Homes to undertake an archaeological evaluation at 18-26, Russell Hill Road, Purley, London Borough of Croydon, in advance of the development of the site. A total of five trenches were excavated across the site, to reveal the underlying natural chalk at a maximum height of 107.37m OD in the northwest of the site, falling away to 105.91m OD to the east and 103.58m OD to the south. Extensive prior landscaping of the site has resulted in significant truncation of the underlying natural chalk in the north and west of the site and in these areas survival of any potential archaeological deposits is considered to be minimal. To the south and east of the site, on the other hand, ground raising operations have resulted in the preservation of an archaeological horizon, consisting of a single undated north-south aligned ditch. This feature is close in position and alignment to the current boundary between two properties and is considered to represent an earlier incarnation of this boundary.
