Abstract: |
Archaeological recording took place in the walled South Garden, at Stoneleigh Abbey, Stoneleigh, when work was being undertaken on a 19th-century greenhouse which backed onto a late 18th-century Grade II Listed garden wall. The wall has scars suggesting an earlier building once stood there but nothing is shown on any of the historic maps of the area until 1886. Large quantities of brick rubble were recorded below the topsoil, of the same type as the greenhouse walls, suggesting the possibilty of below-ground vaulting for heating pipes. Two large fragments of sandstone carved with vermiculated decoration were also recorded which may have been from a post-medieval grotto or other type of decorative garden feature. |
