Abstract: |
Outwood Academy, designed by Harry Wormald, the West Riding Education Architect, and completed in 1939, was originally intended to accommodate 540 pupils. The building is constructed with brick, concrete window sills, heads and coping. The structure has a steel frame with concrete floors and a flat concrete roof. The design is a simple Art Deco style with linear symmetry emphasised by the pale window sills, heads and coping which contrast with the darker brick. The school is built around east and west quadrangles which are separated by a central aisled hall. Originally the school had sides for the girls and the boys; each with own cloakroom, toilet, entrance and playground. To the north and south of the quadrangles and hall are the classrooms, store rooms and library on the ground and first floors. The ground floor of the south range also contains the headmaster's and other offices. The north range includes the staff rooms, staff toilets, dining hall and kitchen, with a boiler room below the kitchen. |
