Abstract:
Seven trenches, amounting to 107.2 m2 were excavated across an area for redevelopment at 4 Jeanfield Road. The number and positioning of trenches was constrained by several factors, including services, standing buildings, trees, waterlogged ground and steeply sloping terrain. Subsoil deposits, deposits of made ground, and a modern linear cut were identified during the evaluation. No remains of archaeological significance were identified. A standing building survey was undertaken of Jeanfield House, also within the development area. This confirmed that Jeanfield House was constructed in c.1870 and designed by local architect David Smart. The building is typical late Victorian revivalist style with large mullioned windows, advanced eaves and tall chimneys. The survey was confined to the exterior of the building only and this showed only superficial as only superficial alterations were carried out on the exterior of the building which included the addition of a corridor on the south elevation to link with a c.1980s office block. Two c.mid-20th century annex buildings were added to the north and south wing's east-facing elevation. The north or main front elevation was built in snecked sandstone whilst the rest of the elevations were built of coursed sandstone. The west-facing elevation had a fire escape and fire doors created by enlarging existing windows. A boiler house and a fuel store had been built against the western boundary wall.
