Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment, building recording survey and an archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Northamptonshire Archaeology on land at Wisteria Farm, Maxey, Peterborough. The earliest map evidence of the village dates from the early 18th century and suggests that part of the farmhouse predates this. From historic map evidence and the building survey it was determined that the stock barn is the oldest of the farm buildings, being present from at least 1772. The two flanking ranges appear to be contemporary and are present from 1886. Archaeological features, dating to the late Saxon to medieval period, were concentrated to the western and eastern sides of the site and included pits and ditches. A north-south aligned ditch in the eastern part of the site may be one of the 12th-century planned boundaries, lying approximately 4 chains from the western boundary of the site. |
