Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation and watching brief on an old open cast coal mine site on land to the west of New Works Lane just west of the Telford conurbation. This formed part of a programme of archaeological fieldwork in connection with planning permission. Seven evaluation trenches were excavated across three previously identified features; two further test trenches were excavated during the watching brief. Earthworks relating to previous mining activities were also present within the site application area. These include prospecting pits, outcroppings, shafts and shaft mounds and other earthworks. There is evidence identifying the surrounding area of Short Wood as being cleared and mined in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. There is a scheduled monument at New Works Wood 'Coal mining remains 350m northwest and 520m north of New Works village'. This comprised mainly of former shafts, spoil tips and an associated tramway. The evidence from the evaluation and watching brief suggests that the trackway dates to post nineteenth century. There is also evidence that suggests back filling of large pits and possibly shafts. There was no indication of earlier archaeological activity found on the site although this may have been affected by subsistence.
