Abstract:
An historic building survey of two adjoining cottages in the grounds of Valence School was carried out as part of the planning process prior to development of a new teaching block . This comprised a mainly photographic record, followed by investigation of the fabric during demolition. The building had been subdivided into two 2-storey cottages since 1920, but originated c 1840 as part of a model or planned farm. Superficially the structure was quite simple, with rough stonework at ground level overlaid by brick and a slate-covered gabled roof, and measured c 22.7m by 6.0m in plan. However, the 1920 conversion had involved extensive alteration: stripping of internal render revealed a number of blocked windows and doors, and the upper brickwork and roof had been wholly rebuilt. It was possible to establish the general character and some details of the original building. It was a fairly tall structure, c 18m by 6m in plan, probably with a series of high but narrow windows on its eastern frontage. The construction was of rough stone with brick jambs, although the upper side walls may have been timbered: this is suggested by the heights of the original walls, and by a brick buttress-type feature at the upper level of the southeast corner. Internally there was no evidence for a second floor or other divisions, although a loft is possible. The use of the building is conjectural, although it could have been a barn. A small southern extension had been added by 1869, and may have served as a cart shed or machine house.
