Abstract:
Evaluation on the eastern side of Maidstone Museum did not reveal any early deposits or structures. However, one trench exposed substantial stone foundations and other features forming the western end of the Gatehouse to Brenchley Gardens. This building dates to c 1873 - soon after the Gardens were established - and was demolished following bomb damage in 1940. The only earlier finds were represented by three pieces of reused moulded stone, apparently sections of window mullion. A second trench did not reveal any historic remains, and fairly recent imported soil directly overlay natural clay. All previous deposits had been truncated, either in the early 1870s or during subsequent development of the Museum - possibly as late as the mid 1970s.
