Abstract: |
An Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample investigation was carried out at the Stoke Bridge. Natural gravels were observed in the main site and were overlain by subsoil deposits and topsoil. Further to the east and in the South Field alluvial clays were observed . The limited groundworks conducted on the Cooling site revealed alluvial clay overlain by a sequence of subsoil and topsoil. Roman pottery was retrieved from the subsoil on the Main site, as well as a single unstratified sherd of Iron Age pottery. The geoarchaeological investigation revealed that the landscape was mainly open grassland between successive period where the area became marshy and the alluvial clays were deposited. |
