Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation of a public open space, called The Croft, at Aldridge, Walsall, West Midlands was undertaken. The investigation commenced with a geophysical survey (magnetometry and resistivity) that was followed by the excavation of three trial trenches to target potential archaeological features identified by the survey and to investigate visible earthworks. Two ditches of medieval date, and a pit that dates to the late 16th/early 17th century, were encountered in the northern half of the park. Boundary ditches, several of which are still evident as slight earthworks, are post-medieval or modern in date and correspond with boundaries shown on 19th and 20th-century maps. Other features include a backfilled pond, modern services and general disturbance. |
