Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the groundworks associated with the construction of three new houses at the Circa Fish site, Westgate Street, Lewes. The watching brief comprised observing the excavation of the building footprint to remove any previous foundations, the drilling of piling holes, and the excavation of the wall foundation trenches for the new houses. It established that there had been substantial disturbance in the past, resulting in a deep layer of made ground and building demolition material. The only archaeological feature found was a 19th century wall, and the only stratified artefacts dated to the 19th century, although a single unstratified sherd of 14th century pottery was also recovered. |
