Abstract:
Addyman Archaeology was commissioned by The University of Edinburgh to produce an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment in response to the planning application to develop the grounds of Old College Quadrangle in Edinburgh. The location is one of great historical significance and archaeological potential and analysis was conducted of cartographic, pictorial and documentary materials. These confirmed the existence of the Church of St. Mary in the Fields dating to the 13th century as well as an associated hospital. A mansion house known as Hamilton House occupied the site from the 16th century, with The University of Edinburgh acquiring the land and developing their campus and facilities from 1583. This campus grew piecemeal over the preceding centuries, with Hamilton House continuing as an integral part of the University complex. Construction of the current Quadrangle was undertaken in stages from 1789-1827 and the ground level was lowered significantly in 1832.
