Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land south of Eastwood Cemetery, March, Cambridgeshire. This was in order to determine the archaeological implications of the proposed extension of the cemetery. The site lies in an archaeologically sensitive area, located close to cropmarks of prehistoric or Roman enclosures, and also near to Roman settlements and industrial sites. Immediately to the southwest of the proposed cemetery extension is the nationally important Scheduled Monument known as 'The March Sconce', a Civil War earthwork. The evaluation identified a series of parallel ditches. The ditches formed a pattern of field boundaries and drains associated with previous agricultural use of the land.
