Abstract:
EH NHPP Pnum 6468. During the 1990s the Monuments Protection Programme investigated survival and loss of medieval and post-medieval agricultural earthworks in the English Midlands. The region was identified as preserving the best surviving examples in Europe. The work was published as 'Turning the Plough' (Hall 2001), and identified 40 parishes where the most significant earthworks were located. In 2011 it was decided to update records of what survives in the 40 parishes. English Heritage took new oblique photographs, allowing the condition of ridge and furrow to be mapped and recorded in detail. A perhaps smaller than expected amount (12%) of the ridge and furrow that survived in 1999 had been lost or badly damaged by early 2012, but proposed reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy, amongst other issues, has resulted in a period of renewed pressure on long term pasture. The project will provide the information base that informs future management of these internationally significant heritage assets.
