Abstract:
In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed new development site located at 1-7 Sapley Road, Hartford, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of targeted trial trenching. Five trial trenches were excavated across the site, focussing on the areas of greatest potential impact. The trenches revealed two undated linear features, two irregular pits, one undated, the other containing Saxo-Norman pottery sherds, and a large post-medieval quarry pit. Brick wall foundations dating to the post-medieval period were also revealed in Trench 1 and modern wall foundations were revealed in Trench 2, these were probably associated with the demolished bungalow. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance may be considered to be Low for all periods except the medieval and post-medieval periods where the risk may be considered to be Moderate to High. Although features of these periods are common, the relationship of those features to the site of the possible apple store means that they should be considered locally to be of Moderate significance.
