Abstract: |
A rapid survey of the roof structures of this large church was made during repairs and reslating of the roofs in 2011-12. The chuch is a Royal foundation of Anglo-Saxon date which retains elements of Romanesque fabric, but was much rebuilt in the late medieval period. The survey identified the original form of the church as a cruciform building with a transeptal tower on the south, balanced either by a transept or, possibly, by a second tower on the north. This building was later wholly disguised and obscured by the addition, in three stages, of a north aisle and also a western tower. As many as five or six different wagon roof structures dating from the 14th to the early 16th century were recorded, together with evidence of thatched, timber shingled and slated roof coverings. |
