Abstract: |
an archaeological excavation was undertaken by Channel 4's 'Time Team' at the scheduled site of Drayton, commonly referred to as Sutton Courtenay (NGR 448733, 193671). Substantial and significant prehistoric and Anglo-Saxon remains are known from the near vicinity. Part of the Drayton Cursus runs through the Site, and there are a number of Bronze Age ring ditches and enclosures in the area. Previous archaeological work has revealed extensive Anglo-Saxon settlement remains, including both sunken feature buildings (SFBs) and timber-built halls. The excavation, comprising four trenches, confirmed the location of several features previously identified from aerial photographs, but also demonstrated the limitations of both aerial photographs and geophysical survey data in the precise identification of features. |
