Abstract:
Bedford Borough Council has purchased an area of land c. 8ha in size, located between Bushy Close Spinney and a bridleway that runs along the north side of Norse Road Cemetery, Norse Road, Bedford. The former agricultural land will be converted into an extension to the existing cemetery. Based on the results of an earlier evaluation, it was anticipated that the development area would produce evidence for Roman, medieval and post-medieval activity. Roman remains were identified and are likely to have been associated with field systems. However, they made up a relatively small proportion of the archaeological remains in that area. The vast majority of significant remains dated to the late Saxon/Saxo-Norman period and represent the remains of pit-digging.
