Abstract: |
An evaluation of the proposed route of a new road was conducted by John Moore Heritage Services from 20th - 22nd February 2006. Eleven trenches, totalling 227 metres in length, were excavated to reveal the underlying natural geology. In places this was cut by significant archaeological features. The evaluation confirmed the results of the geophysical survey in that the several ditches were located and very few discrete features (post holes and pits) were present. The lack of finds from the features, within the exception of a flint flake, coupled with the presence of prehistoric flintwork and pottery from the topsoil suggests that the field boundaries are prehistoric. A rectangular enclosure may be of the same date. Where dateable, the finds seem to indicate an early Bronze Age date for the activity. A chert blade core is of Mesolithic or Neolithic date. This may just be a casual loss. A single abraded sherd of Romano-British date was also found. |
