Abstract:		 The site occupies the former site of Exe Vale Plant Yard, and is located between the Cleve Road and Exwick Road. The development lies in an area of archaeological potential adjoining the hamlet/farmstead of Foxhayes (located immediately to the north), and at a crossroads of the main historic route (Foxhayes/St Andrew's Road) down the western side of the Exe valley with another leading NW from Exe Bridge and the city up to a holy well site near Cleeve House, and continuing NW as Winchester Avenue/Exwick Lane. The land in this development was historically agricultural land on the edge of the flood plain of the River Exe. The solid geology of the area consists of alluvial deposits above riverine gravels, silts and sand. This is overlying weak shales and mudstones of the Crackington Formation (Bristow et al. 1985). The work was required under a condition attached to planning consent for the construction of a new housing development. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 3 trenches: 2 trenches measuring 10m by 1.6m, and 1 trench 5m long and 1.6m wide. The trenches typically revealed a sequence of 300-550mm deep modern deposits overlying alluvial/colluvial clays. No archaeological deposits and/or features were identified. Evidence from the evaluation would suggest that the site was terraced and the ground reduced prior to the construction of the tar works in the early 20th century. No traces of the buildings shown on the 1st edition OS map of 1890 and the 1938 OS map were found. The lack of pottery and lithics from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the potential for significant archaeological survival is low. As a result, it was agreed with the ECCAO that no further archaeological site work was necessary.
