Abstract:		 During February 2012 SNM Pipelines Ltd undertook an archaeological excavation on and at the base of the earth mound (motte) within the grounds of Chester Castle, Chester (SJ 405 658). The work was undertaken on behalf of Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, part of the North West Gas Alliance for National Grid. The aim of this excavation is to establish the existence and location of any surviving archaeological remains and to record their location, extent and character. Two trenches were excavated falling within the boundary of a scheduled monument, namely Chester Castle (List Entry Number 1006773). Trench 1 was situated on the front of the curtain wall to the west of the Inner Bailey (List Entry Number 1245537) whilst Trench 2 was positioned close to Harrison's semi circular forecourt wall (List Entry Number 1245518).
