Abstract:
Archaeological work comprising area excavation and watching brief was carried out at Heathley Chase, Wolverton Road, Milton Keynes. The archaeological investigations were requested by the MKAO following the unexpected discovery of human remains during the construction of a residential development. The excavation area comprised a c. 5m x 5m area centred on the human remains that had been found by the house builder . The watching was carried out on construction groundworks within a 50m radius of the findspot, excluding areas already substantially built up or where the levels had been significantly reduced. The majority of the human remains were disarticulated and had been disturbed by ploughing and modern services. However, in places, the remains appeared to have been protected by in-situ placed stones Two fragments of human bone were subject to AMS 14C dating by the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) radiocarbon laboratory. The dated material derived from two discrete spreads of human bone. The results give a radiocarbon age of 4762 ± 37 BP for the bone from one context and 4752 ± 37 BP for the material from the other context.
