Abstract:
The Lyonesse Project aimed to reconstruct the evolution of the physical environment of the Isles of Scilly during the Holocene, the progressive occupation of this changing coastal landscape by early peoples and their response to marine inundation and changing marine resource availability. Of particular importance nationally was the collection and analysis of data which has increased knowledge of sea level change during the past 8,000 years and provided baseline data for estimating future sea level rise in Scilly. The project extended over a four-year period and involved five main types of work: geophysical survey of the intertidal and marine zones in the northern part of Scilly; a programme of sampling, assessment and analysis of selected 'peat'sites in Scilly; EDM and/or GPS survey of terrestrial and intertidal peat exposures; radiocarbon dating of 'peat' deposits and OSL dating of sand deposits to help reconstruct the chronology of sea level history; and a programme of outreach to inform the public and encourage volunteer participation. The project was co-ordinated by Cornwall Council's Historic Environment Projects Team and included experts from Exeter, Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Plymouth Universities as well as local interest groups such as Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeological Society (CISMAS) and the Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Group (IMAG) and involved others in the local diving community on Scilly. The results of Year 1 were disseminated in an interim report. The final results will be presented in monograph publication, likely to be published by Cornwall Council and English Heritage in 2014.
