Abstract: |
A trench evaluation carried out was undertaken on land at Portledge House, Alwington, Devon. The proposed development is situated within gardens to the northwest of the Grade II* listed house. The evaluation comprised the machine-excavation of three trenches totalling 33m long. These were positioned specifically to test anomalies identified by an earlier geophysical survey. Nineteenth-century ground was exposed in all of the trenches with only Trench 3 revealing an archaeological feature, of the same date. All deposits, the feature, and most of the finds, are of the same late 19th-century date. |
