Abstract:
A desk-based assessment for the historic environment was undertaken at Fosseway Avenue, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire (National Grid Reference SP 2042 3170). It was undertaken on behalf of Arthur Amos Associates for Sainburys PLC, who intend to construct a foodstore on a site south of Fosseway Avenue, for which a planning application is in preparation. This report describes and assesses the significance of the heritage assets (and potential heritage assets) that are potentially affected by the application. The setting of heritage assets is considered. The potential impact of the application, and the need for further on-site evaluation, is assessed. The site is a rectangular portion of arable land located to the south of Moreton-in-Marsh on the eastern side of the Fosse Way (a former Roman Road) which is the route into the town from the south. Within the development site a penannular cropmark has been identified from aerial photographs, which may indicate the survival of an archaeological feature, possibly a late prehistoric or Romano-British enclosure or funerary monument. An extensive complex of cropmarks have also been recorded some 500m southeast of the site, which are likely to represent a late prehistoric or Romano British settlement and surrounding field system Moreton-in-Marsh is thought to have developed in the Early Medieval period alongside the Fosse Way. The settlement is unlikely to have extended as far south as the development site. Traces of ridge and furrow within the area demonstrate that it lay within the agricultural hinterland of the town. It is concluded that there is a moderate to high potential for the survival of archaeological features within the site, due to the proximity of the Roman road and the record of a cropmark.
