Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development over five days and involved the excavation of twelve trenches, comprising 720 m sq of the proposed 1.41hectare development area. A total of five trenches were devoid of archaeological activity though unstratified Roman pottery was recovered from one trench. The remaining seven trenches all contained archaeological features which comprised ditches, gullies, pits and possible trackways dating from at least the Roman period. In the western part of the site phased remains of ditches and pits were encountered which dated from the Roman period and probably earlier and may have formed boundary delineations associated with a possible trackway depicted on an earlier geophysical survey. In the eastern part of the site an isolated ditch demarcated a boundary and towards the northern portion of the field several features may have provided evidence for structural remains and a possible holloway. Isolated features were also encountered in two further trenches located roughly in the central part of the site. |
