Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in February 2014 during work at Trevone, Church Path, Ipplepen, Devon. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential close to the medieval priory, located in the vicinity of the parish church of St Andrews. Archaeological investigations on the site of the medical centre (HER Event No. EDV4740) to the west revealed the presence of a medieval building and evidence that the graveyard was more extensive than was previously thought. The work was therefore required by Devon County Historic Environment Team under a condition attached to the grant of planning permission (13/03282/FUL). A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the construction of an extension to the existing building. A small foundation trench for the extension, 0.6m in width and measuring 9.6m in length, was excavated. The groundworks exposed a mid red clay natural subsoil (103) with occasional shillet inclusions. This was in turn overlain by a 0.3m thick mid reddish brown clay subsoil (102) underneath a 0.3m thick dark brown topsoil (101). No deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity was found. The lack of pottery and lithics from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the site is archaeologically sterile. This is the only report on these works.
