Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted for Swann Edwards Architects on behalf of their client Norman Fox ahead of plans to build four new town houses on a compact plot of land at the centre of the market town of March. The single trench revealed evidence of Roman period salt production and a sequence of largely naturally deposited layers that had probably formed on the edge of a channel in the earlier medieval period. A layer of peat had also formed on the edge of the channel in the 12th-14th centuries which may mark the edge of the original course of the River Nene, prior to it being diverted in the 13th century, though this is not confirmed. The last deposits in the sequence were deliberately dumped to raise the ground level - probably during the 17th to 19th centuries. |
