Abstract: |
In response to a condition on the planning permission for a residential development at 41 Pembroke Road, Baldock Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developer to undertake the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. The fieldwork revealed evidence of at least two linear features. One of these yielded pottery dating from the early 1st century AD to the early 2nd century. The ditch may represent part of an enclosure surrounding a farmstead which was subsequently used for the deposition of domestic refuse. The recovery of several fragments of brick and daub indicates the presence of at least one contemporary structure inthe vicinity. The remaining ditch yielded no archaeological artefacts, although its size and form indicates that it likely represents a former boundary on the alignment of South Road. |
