Abstract:
CgMs Consulting, acting on behalf of Ward Homes commissioned Headland Archaeology to undertake an archaeological investigation at land NW of Sholden, Deal in Kent. This was in advance of construction of residential dwellings and associated groundworks. A program of archaeological trial trenching was carried out in 1993 and revealed the remains of two Roman ditches in the south-eastern part of the Development Area (DA). Due to the potential impact of the development on these remains, Kent County Council's County Archaeologist recommended to Deal District Council that a condition was placed on planning permission requiring the implementation of a programme of archaeological investigation. Excavation of the site in January 2013 revealed evidence associated with the outskirts of a nearby Roman villa at Hull Place (HER TR35SE4). These comprised two parallel ditches forming a probable trackway leading in and out of the Roman villa and a number of pits containing discarded pottery dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD. A cremation urn burial was also revealed on the perimeter of the site.
