Abstract: |
Channel 4's Time Team undertook an evaluation of a medieval fortified manor house, Scargill Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (No. 32730). Restoration work on the extant gatehouse has dated the building to the 15th or 16th century and blocked up windows and a fireplace are visible in the walls of standing buildings. The gatehouse was further investigated and seven evaluation trenches were excavated, as a result of which two periods of use were identified. In the 12th-14th centuries the building appears to have had a defensive function, with a large curtain wall and a walled enclosure or barmkin to the south-east. After a hiatus in activity, the manor was re-occupied and substantially modified in the 15th-16th centuries, during which period the gatehouse and a ground floor hall were built and parts of the curtain wall were demolished. The hous is thought to have fallen into disuse in the early 18th century. No features earlier in date than medieval were found. |
