Abstract: |
South West Archaeology Ltd. was instructed to undertake a desk-based assessment and historic building recording at Brynn Mill, Roche, Cornwall. The cartographic research and the survey of the buildings appear to indicate the mill building and associated leat and mill pond were built in the 18th century, with a small cottage built adjacent, probably in the 19th century. The Mill was extended in the third quarter of the 19th century, when the extant machinery and wheel was installed; this was a double layshaft drive to two pairs of millstones. The Mill and Cottage were intact, and the mill machinery recorded, in 1988. However, the buildings are now both ruinous and most wooden interior fixtures have been lost; only the upstream end of the hurst survives in a parlous state. |
