Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd were instructed by CSA Architects to undertake a desk-based assessment and walkover survey on Land off Newton Road, St. Mawes, St, Just in Roseland, Cornwall. The walkover survey and the desk-based and cartographic research have highlighted that there is some archaeological potential within the proposed development area, although there is some truncation which has occurred during the 20th century. The field names and field pattern of the area in which the development is situated are suggestive of post-medieval enclosures and amalgamations of parts a former medieval open-field system. The site and the surrounding area are situated within anciently enclosed land, although the HER shows a surprising paucity of prehistoric and Roman sites in St. Mawes, presumably due to the intensive medieval and post-medieval land-use and development which has occurred. The site is situated to the north of a known medieval settlement (Newtown) and within the manor of Borgullas. The walkover survey indicated that there were a series of extant earthworks which are likely to relate to modern usage of the site, i.e. a reservoir and bike jump. There were also the very slight remains of two former field boundaries shown on the 1840 tithe map and removed post-1963. The fact that these two hedgebanks were so slight may suggest that there has been extensive truncation, although it may simply reflect solely the removal of these hedgebanks by machine.
