Abstract:
A programme of historic building recording and an archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the site of the Fairmile Inn at 44 Biggar Road, Edinburgh prior to the demolition of the Inn in advance of new development. The Fairmile Inn is a 1950s built inn, originally known as the Hillburn Roadhouse. It was built after the demolition of a previous building (of unknown date, although at least mid-19th century in date). This was in the location of the former Bow Bridge, located along the main route into Edinburgh from this side of the city out towards Fairmilehead. The site was heavily affected by the construction of the Edinburgh City Bypass in the 1980s. The archaeological evaluation and watching brief did not uncover any evidence of the earlier building or any other archaeologically significant features or artefacts. Kevin Paton, AOC Archaeology Group 2013.
