Abstract:
Headland Archaeology Ltd conducted an excavation at the site of Greyfriars Kirkhouse, Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh in order to satisfy a planning condition no. 1 set by the City of Edinburgh Council (Plan. Ref. 10/00672/CON). The work was commissioned by Gareth Hoskins Architects on behalf of Greyfriars Tolbooth Kirk and followed previous phases of trial trenching and historic building recording. The results of the excavation show that there were three main phases of activity on the site. The earliest features on site comprised a large scarp running northeast to southwest across almost the entire area of the excavation that is interpreted as one side of a broad flat bottomed ditch. Related to this feature was a short length of walling located at the terminal of the ditch. Additional features from this phase were a number of pits spread across the site. The next phase of activity saw a levelling of the site with deposits of clay and reworked midden material spread across the site up to 0.7m deep. This levelling activity enabled the construction of a tenement on the site, along with associated structures, such as a well. The final phase of the site saw the remodelling of the tenement into a brass works in the 19th century. The surviving aspects of the brass works comprised a number of flues and two casting pits located in the cellars of the tenement. Jamie Humble, Headland Archaeology 2011.
