Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Land at Weston under Penyard (NGR SO 6360 2325). It was undertaken on behalf of CgMs Consulting, whose client intends residential development of the site for which an outline planning application has been submitted to Herefordshire Council. The site is a former pasture field at the base of a south-west facing slope on the eastern edge of Weston under Penyard. The Scheduled site of the Roman town of Ariconium (NHLE 1005364) lies 700m to the north-east of the site. This was a Roman industrial small town with wide trading links and considerable status. Archaeological investigation within the Roman town indicates that it was settled from the late Iron Age and seems to have reached its maximum extent in the late 2nd/early 3rd centuries. A Romano-British farmstead was recorded 50m to the north of the site during archaeological works associated with a sewage pipeline laid in 1993-1994 and Roman settlement activity was recorded during an evaluation undertaken as part of the proposed Ryeford Bypass on the southern side of the road, south-east of the study site. The line of a Roman road linking Ariconium to the Forest of Dean also runs adjacent to the site's eastern boundary.
