Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned by James Parry of National Trust (the Client) to undertake historic building recording at Laundry Cottages, Penrose Estate, Cornwall. The buildings have been deteriorating over recent years and, as such, have been identified as requiring a historic building survey in order to better inform their interpretation and maintenance. This would complement the Conservation Management Plan recently completed for Penrose House and the surrounding parkland. The building now known as Laundry Cottages is a rare survival of a multi-functional service range of cottages and workshops, dating from the 18th century. The condition of the building has deteriorated significantly and can now be considered 'at risk' and in need of vital works to ensure its survival. Care should be taken in developing a management plan which considers the complex multi-functional spaces within the building and does not adversely affect the large colony of bats within the building. Where possible, repairs should be undertaken using the same methods evidenced in the building and, where structural repairs are required, care should be taken to minimise the intervention/disturbance to the rest of the building.
