Greenwich Palace Excavations, 1970
Philip W Dixon
219 - 222
Excavations in the Grand Square of the Royal Naval College have revealed three phases of building on the site and provided evidence of the layout of Henry VII's palace. Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester's brick-built manor house of c 1430-1500 was demolished to make way for the Henrican palace, substantially complete by 1505. Its great rectangular tower had three projecting bays on the river front, and an extensive system of sewers has been uncovered. One of the projecting bays was later altered into a fore-building, perhaps by Henry VIII. Other alterations of late 16th-17th centuries are evident before final demolition, between 1663 and 1690, of this palace. Its successor was begun by Charles II and not completed. Work continues.
