TL 3800. A summary, with sketch plan, of archaeological and historical evidence from the town and its surroundings from Mesolithic to Industrial and recent times. A Saxon hall at least 50 ft long has been partly explored and dated to after AD 850. Investigation of the grange site in advance of roadworks gave evidence of a dovecote, a kitchen or workshop and a twelve-bay barn, all originating in c 1200 (two were brick-built). A very long building and a lodge date to 15th century. For the industrial period, plans of 18th-19th century recently found are for a gunpowder mill and the Enfield gun-factory. See abstracts 70/918 and 71/1080 for reports on the cloister garth and a post-medieval town house. See also abstract 1497.
