Abstract: |
In March 2016, Historic Royal Palaces undertook a watching brief to monitor the repair work and the excavation of a trench around the base of a lamp post located on the south-western corner of the Old Hospital Block, Tower of London. The mitigation work was principally in place to record and protect any archaeological remains but was also a good opportunity to identify if there were any remains of the Tudor Range of buildings once located between the Wardrobe Tower and the Broad Arrow Tower as well as the later 17th century residential building that once occupied the area now taken up by the Old Hospital Block. However, the excavated area was heavily disturbed by the installation of a number of services, therefore no archaeological features were encountered; only rubble material including several 17th/18th century bricks, which may be the remnants of the demolition material related to the 17th century building that used to exist in the area now occupied by the Old Hospital Block. |
