Abstract: |
This report describes the results of a watching brief conducted during construction work on the site of the former Duke's and King's Docks on Liverpool's waterfront. The docks were constructed in the late 18th century as Liverpool's trade expanded. Duke's Dock was extended southwards in the early 19th century and King's Dock was extensively modified in the early 20th century. Both docks were partially filled in during the late 20th century. The watching brief found the surviving walls to the 19th century extension to Duke's Dock and the basements of the Duke's Dock Grain Warehouse, constructed 1811. The original northern quayside of the old King's Dock was also excavated and a set of timber lock gates which had been deposited against the dock wall during the remodelling of the early 20th century. There were also remains of brick warehouse buildings located on the sides of Duke's Dock. |
