Abstract: |
Watching brief done on grounds works required for the installation of a lightning conductor onto the north eastern side of the keep of the castle. Sloping bedrock encountered within the western half of the earthing plate pit was identified as probably being part of the hillside scarped to form the 'motte', which also forms the edge of the castle ditch. Debris from when the area of the castle overlooking the site of the earthing pit was heavily modified in the seventeenth century when the chapel was converted into a gun battery during the Civil War or in a possible slighting of the gun position after the fall of the castle was encountered within the earthing pit trench. 2 sherds of Medieval ridge tile were also recovered from contexts within the earthing pit. Four slots cut across the curtain wall, and wall walk had no impact on the structure of the building. |
