Abstract:
The excavation focused on exposing and recording an area of Late Iron Age and Roman activity which had been identified by archaeological evaluation. A sequence of enclosures was partially revealed by the works, although no datable enclosures were fully exposed within the confines of the excavation areas. The enclosure system was established during the Late Iron Age to early Roman period, and remodelled on successive occasions through to at least the 3rd to 4th centuries AD. The major mid-Roman enclosures appear to have been built to the south-east of the earlier enclosures, although there was evidence that some of the earlier features continued in use throughout the Roman period. The excavations produced a substantial quantity of pottery. The assemblage was dominated by Roman pottery but smaller quantities of Iron Age pottery were also present. Other finds were more limited in quantity and range but included other ceramic objects (Roman roof tile, fired clay and pre-formed ceramic oven material), glass, metal objects, iron slag and stone. Although occupation of the site is attested to by large quantities of domestic refuse present in ditches, only very limited evidence for structural remains was identified during the works. This included a truncated undated ring gully, probably representing the remains of a round house, and a small number of four-post structures, which are commonly interpreted as granaries. It is possible that any settlement activity was focused beyond the excavation areas.
