Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken of land adjacent to the Vernon Arms, Droitwich Rd, Hanbury, Worcestershire (NGR SO 9648 6293). It was undertaken on behalf of Endine Properties Limited, who intends to develop the site for residential use, for which a planning application has been submitted. Six trenches were excavated on a grid array across the site. The natural brownish red clay was observed at 0.26-0.45m below the present ground surface, below a shallow subsoil and topsoil. No significant archaeological deposits, structures or horizons were identified, nor finds retrieved. There was no evidence for a continuation of the Roman cropmark activity identified to the south (WSM 36236). The site appears to have remained in agricultural use, under orchard until the late 1950s or early 1960s, and then under pasture to the present day. The postholes, for a series of wooden posts, probably sub-divided the field to form paddocks, although this is not indicated on the cartographic sources. |
