Abstract:
MOLA Northampton carried out a programme of historic building recording at the former Garston Gasworks, Bank's Road, Garston, Liverpool. Recording comprised an enhanced Level 2 photographic survey of two gasholders as well as associated pipes and remains of structures relating to the former gasworks. Recording was carried out in two phases; Phase I comprised a pre-demolition archaeological survey of the site, whilst Phase II was carried out during demolition works by the demolitions contractor Erith Group, and consisted of photographic recording of areas and elements not visible or accessible during Phase I. Gasholder 1, at the western side of the site was a larger, column guided type, constructed in 1894. At the eastern side of the side, Gasholder 2 was spiral guided with a static base tank and dates to 1924. The holders were dewatered and purged of gas prior to the start of works and were fully dismantled by the end of recording. The resulting voids were infilled as part of the works. The removal of the holders and associated pipework will allow redevelopment of the area.
