Abstract: |
A firing range or rifle range shown by the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1886 on Bromyard Downs used by the late Victorian Rifle Volunteer movement was investigated in order to determine the lifespan of the range and the weapons used there. A metal-detector survey was carried out with local volunteers under professional supervision by Herefordshire Archaeology and showed that the rifle range had been used from 1860 through to a date probably in the mid-1880s but probably not long after 1890; the range was certainly officially disused by the early 1900s (2nd edition O.S.). Three types of Victorian service rifle can be shown to have been used and the recovered ammunition shows evidence of some of the ballistic characteristics noted by users at the time. The survey also showed that the firing range - a widespread but little-studied archaeological monument type - retains its below-ground archaeological signature despite the post-war levelling of its earthworks. |
