Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in April 2016 at Land off Haden Way, Willingham. The fieldwork was undertaken to inform an outline planning application for the residential development of the site. The evaluation comprised the excavation of twelve trenches. The Cambridgeshire Historic Environment Record records no known archaeological remains within or immediately adjacent to the site, although prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval sites are recorded in the wider vicinity. A previous geophysical survey identified evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation across the site. The evaluation identified two north-east/south-west orientated ditches. Pottery dating from the late 2nd to 4th century AD was recovered from the silted fill of one of these ditches. A further undated ditch was also recorded. Medieval plough furrows, the remains of the open field system that once surrounded the settlement of Willingham, were encountered on a north-north-east/south-south-west alignment across the site. The evaluation also revealed two undated, but probable 20th-century tree throws associated with the sites former use as an orchard.
