Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in December 2015 at the Former Shepton Mallett Prison, Shepton Mallett, Somerset. A total of three trenches were excavated. The evaluation uncovered rubble levelling deposits in the base of all trenches. In Trench 2 these overlay a large quarry pit. In Trench 3 a culverted stream, a north/south orientated wall and a box culvert were recorded; all date from the mid-19th century to the present. In Trench 1 a series of rectangular cuts were identified which are very likely to be the remains of a prisoner burials anticipated to be present. These were overlain deposits belonging to the prison gardens, which were also observed in Trench 2. |
