Abstract: |
Two small scale excavations were carried out within the interior of Little Doward hillfort by Herefordshire Archaeology. In 2009 a small scale excavation was carried out in an area of disturbance caused by a fallen beech tree and where some quantity of Iron Age ceramics had been recovered. The trench examined small areas of two sub-circular building platforms. Little definite structural evidence was recorded but part of what is probably a midden deposit was excavated. Large quantities of bone and Iron Age ceramics were recovered together with some metalwork and metalworking residues. Four worked bone artefacts were found including a parallelopiped die. Ceramic styles and C14 dates from the bone place this activity firmly in the middle Iron Age. A small quantity of late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pottery was also recovered along with briquetage from Cheshire and Worcestershire. The ceramics suggest that the site might have had wider than normal trading links, perhaps reflecting its proximity to a major source of iron. Work in 2011 was carried out within the south-eastern portion of the site. |
